Regional Programme for Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a region rich in biocultural diversity. Home to more than 600 million people, the contrast between the hectic pace of rapidly growing cities and quaint rural villages spread across a vast countryside is remarkable. As competition for resources and energy mounts, solutions are urgently needed to strike a balance between sustainable development and conservation of the region’s unique biodiversity.

The Global Diversity Foundation is committed to finding solutions through applied research, education and long term support of community-based initiatives. In Southeast Asia, our main priority is to develop alternative ways of managing the environment in areas where indigenous peoples live close to, or inside, protected areas. Through a blend of participatory research action and interactive training programmes, we are working intensively on exploring the issues between parks and people in Sabah (Malaysian Borneo), our focus site.
